The Republican Party as it is currently constituted will destroy the United States — politically, economically, socially and culturally. The democratic reform of our federal system isn't only justified in itself, but necessary to force its moderation into a party compatible with liberal democracy.

Democracy, more than anything is a practice. I always think that the Civil Rights Movement succeeded because from the Civil War black Americans built institutions: universities, fraternities and sororities, churches, that engaged them in democratic practice.

Re-upping the thread this morning cause it’s important that advocates understand how to successfully work with City Council.

People around here seem to think that having a few progressive folks on Portland City Council means that any policy idea that pops into their head should be reality immediately. Nope! It just means there’s a little less organizing and persuasion work to do, because you already have a few votes.

I’ve got a toddler, so I don’t make it out for late drinks much these days, but I was out with a group last night on Hawthorne and it was concerning how empty the bars were. Is that typical right now? Is it just a Hawthorne thing? Is there more energy on Belmont, 28th, or the Central Eastside?

The one part of this I agree with is that we are indeed suffering a revolutionary moment, and it's explicitly fascist. So therefore there must be a counterrevolution to preserve democracy. We need to start thinking in these terms if we want to meet the gravity of the peril we face.
