Beyond Trump’s carriage ride: Britain’s cautionary tale for the U.S.
Donald Trump’s visit to Britain this week came with royal pageantry, but the cautionary tale is what’s outside the palace gates. Britain’s post-Brexit reality is a warning for America. From Brexit to MAGA, both nations abandoned the larger stories that once bound their people together.

Donald Trump’s visit to Britain this past week came with royal pageantry, but the cautionary tale is what lies outside the palace gates. Ben Rhodes joins to explain why the American Dream feels “stale,” how inequality fuels identity appeals, and what it takes to reclaim the American Dream. Democratic leadership, he says, must be about “rebuilding the system” and removing barriers that keep doors closed for ordinary Americans. Trump is ultimately a story of distraction, he says, noting that “the oldest trick in the book” is to keep the working class angry at a scary “other” while doing nothing to fix their problems.

"These are not just words that our politicians speak, they're messages that seep into members of the population who then take it upon themselves to go take action, including violent action" Director of Research at The Soufan Group Colin P. American University professor and author of the new book "Man Up: The New Misogyny and the Rise of Violent Extremism" Cynthia Miller Idriss adds, “We often overlook the role that gender plays" in these conspiracies, which often include "an obsession with white women's reproductive capacity.”

Supreme Court greenlights racial profiling, shreds the Fourth Amendment
This week, the Supreme Court gave ICE the green light to racially profile people during immigration sweeps in Los Angeles, undermining the Fourth Amendment’s core protection against unreasonable searches and seizures. Using the shadow docket—without hearings or explanation—the Court effectively declared that constitutional rights sometimes depend on what you look like.

“They know they can’t win unless they cheat”: Rep. Sharice Davids on GOP redistricting efforts in MO & KS
After successfully redrawing congressional maps in Texas, Republicans under pressure by President Trump have now targeted Missouri in an effort to gain an additional House seat. The newly passed map carves up Kansas City, diluting Democratic and minority voting power. And Kansas may be next. Rep. Sharice Davids (D-KS), whose district was redrawn in 2022 says “people are so angry right now about being disenfranchised.”

Michael Mann & Peter Hotez on the "organized," "deliberate" political attacks on science
Professor Michael Mann and Dr. Peter Hotez are leading experts on climate change and vaccines, respectively, and in recent years, have both been targeted by those who seek to discredit their expertise. That experience led the two to come together to write the new book "Science Under Siege." The campaign against them and other scientists "was organized, it was deliberate, it was politically motivated, and it was financially motivated," Hotez tells Ali Velshi. "The overriding crisis is the rise of misinformation and disinformation," Mann adds.

Velshi Banned Book Club: “The 1619 Project: Born on the Water” co-authored by Renée Watson & illustrated by Nikkolas Smith
By reframing U.S. history by placing the realities of slavery at the center of it, Nikole Hannah-Jones’ landmark initiative “The 1619 Project” offers answers to questions of identity, belonging, and origin for Black Americans. But what about for Black children? Today’s Velshi Banned Book Club meeting will examine the children’s adaptation called “The 1619 Project: Born on the Water”. Lyrically written with beautiful illustrations, “Born on the Water” tells the story of a young girl who receives a family tree assignment in school. The rest, as they say, is history. Co-author Renée Watson & illustrator by Nikkolas Smith join the Velshi Banned Book Club.
