Ten years ago this evening was the high point of a 4-day streak I'll never top. These are May 22, 23, 24, and 25, one per day. May 2016 was enchanted. It also used up all my good fortune for the subsequent 5 or so years!

10 years ago today, I was on my way to Dodge City, KS for what would be one of the defining outbreaks of the decade. A single storm produced 14 consecutive tornadoes, often in pairs.

Portions of northern Missouri are experiencing 75-120+ year floods + high unit streamflows, with plenty more training convection to come. Stuff like this makes me think of the caving videos I watch on YouTube and how awful it would be to be caught underground when this is happening.

A lot of hard, careful, methodical work has gone into this survey. It’s always sobering to observe this level of damage, but we will learn a lot from studying this event.

Downstream users don’t appreciate the significant undertaking it is to maintain these legacy systems on anything close to modern hardware. Many of the people who developed them have retired - there just isn’t the expertise to maintain or further them at this point. (cont.)

SPC will be running its own config of the REFS once HREF retires (SPC REFS). It incorporates the HRRR since it’ll still be around, and removes members that have undesirable convective characteristics due to their convective schemes. It stops some of the bleeding, but it’s going to be a big change.

Small Heimdall update today! Added MRMS QPE:FFG ratio as requested by a FEMA colleague. Added “reload application” button to the settings menu if you’re using it as a PWA & need a reload for any reason. App live polls every hour for updates, gives notification of update. Clicking reloads.

I’m not here to publicly shame the guy. However, my favorite modern chaser phenomenon is watching someone say “I’ve never seen a potentially violent tornado form in…” and then proceed to define violent tornado parameter space.

You know it’s bad when the tornado shows up as a reflectivity hole on MRMS

Decided to have some fun plotting meso-relative PMM composites of low-end tornadic (EF0/1) and false-alarm warning (TOR warned / never produced a tornado during its whole lifecycle) supercells. Each storm's rotated so its forward flank Z gradient is in the x direction. Differences are pretty subtle.

Received some requests to be able to filter ProbSevere objects and alerts by region. Added Canadian Province geography tags as requested by my northern colleagues, and added the ability to filter by state/province/CWA.
