If you add up all the precipitation measured by Wisconet in the last 48 hours, it’s less than 4”. A single CoCoRaHS rain gauge in Gainesville, Florida, reported 4.01” of rain in the last 24 hours.

Very humid start to Sunday morning, but unfortunately, that humidity didn’t come with much rain. Our dry spell continues. Plant Available Water in the top 4” of soil keeps decreasing across much of the state, so irrigation will be necessary for new plants!

It’s been pretty cool across the state so far this May, but the pattern is flipping and we’ll be seeing some more summerlike weather going forward. Those Growing Degree Days will start accumulating and your plants and flowers are really going to start taking off.

Marshfield is reporting data again.

You may have seen that our station in Marshfield is not reporting data. This is due to a cell outage in the area. We are still collecting data there and it will be uploaded once cell service is restored.

That state down south just saw an almost 80 mph wind gust from a line of thunderstorms moving through Chicago. We've got a level 2/5 risk of severe thunderstorms overnight tonight, but not currently expecting widespread or significant severe weather. Damaging winds are the main concern.

Critical Weather Day today for Wisconsin: Very High to Extreme Fire Danger across northern Wisconsin. Avoid creating sparks and any outdoor burning. A Level 2/5 risk of severe weather is in place for southwestern Wisconsin for late this evening. Hail and damaging winds are the main threats.

Roughly 30 million birds crossed Wisconsin last night during migration, and at around 3:40 am, there were nearly 50 million birds in the air. Bird migration time is peaking around this time of year, so keep the lights off overnight to help them fly safely. dashboard.birdcast.org/region/US-WI

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for northwestern Wisconsin for dangerous fire weather conditions tomorrow. Warm temperatures, gusty winds, and low humidity are expected tomorrow, creating conditions for rapid fire spread. Avoid any outdoor burning today and tomorrow.

We're getting back into an active weather pattern, with thunderstorm and severe weather chances the next few days. Friday/Saturday: Level 1/5 risk south/southwestern Wisconsin (mainly hail/gusty winds) Sunday/Monday: Level 2/5 risk west (Sunday) statewide (Monday)

Fire and Ice: There's a Frost Advisory in place for central and north-central Wisconsin overnight tonight, followed by a Fire Weather Watch for Friday across northwestern Wisconsin. Severe weather potential is starting to creep back towards the state Sunday and especially Monday.

Pretty sunny across the state this morning and that's helping temperatures rebound nicely after a frosty start to the day - especially over northern Wisconsin. It looks like we're going to get out of the chilly pattern and into some above normal temperatures, making gardeners rejoice.

What loess does to soil temperature. Daily soil temps over two winters and a summer at two Wisconsin Mesonet stations on outwash plains. At Hancock it's sand to the surface, but the Antigo outwash plain has ~50-100 cm of loess over sand and gravel. Without the loess *and the moisture it holds*...

Hopefully the hummingbirds like their food chilled! It’s a frosty start to Wednesday, with much of the state dipping below freezing overnight. Things are already starting to warm up, and the southern half of the state should get into the 50s this afternoon.

Be sure to protect those sensitive plants tonight as we'll once again see frosty and freezing conditions statewide. We're getting closer to the time when we won't have to worry about it, but if you have seedlings or fresh annuals that you don't want to lose - bring them in!
