If you’re hoping for a white Christmas, head north. Roughly the northern half of Wisconsin has enough snow (1”) to be considered white for Christmas. There are still splotches of snow across southern Wisconsin, but not enough for it to be “official”. Have a safe and happy holiday season.

Freezing drizzle is creating slick spots on the roads across central Wisconsin this morning. Take it easy on your drive this morning. Most of the state will warm above freezing today, melting any glaze that forms.

What a difference six months makes. A much longer period of more intense sunlight for the summer solstice (well, a day after, when it wasn’t as cloudy as the summer solstice this year). A much shorter period of less intense sunlight today on the winter solstice. Walworth is our southernmost site.

The wind it is a blowing. And it’s going to bring us some low wind chills tonight. Below zero wind chills for much of the state overnight and early tomorrow.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for northeastern Wisconsin because the wet roadways are expected to quickly freeze and turn icy this evening and overnight. Be careful on the roads!

A Winter Weather Advisory is in place over northwestern Wisconsin today. Light snow and ice accumulations will make roads slick. The low pressure system and cold front moving across the state will also bring gusty winds of 30-40 mph today. Hold onto your hats!

One more really cold day before temperatures moderate at the beginning of the week. -30°F wind chills made it all the way to Arlington and -25°F to the Illinois border this morning.

It’s as cold as ice! Most of the state dipped below zero last night, with a -21°F reported at Grantsburg. Much of northern Wisconsin also saw wind chills around or below -30°F, with our site in Manitowish Waters reaching -36°F! Grab that hot cocoa and put on your favorite Christmas movie.

This morning's lowest wind chills will feel rather mild after this weekend! A Cold Weather Advisory is in place for most of Wisconsin, with wind chills this weekend forecast to drop to -15 to -25°F. A few wind chills below -30°F can't be ruled out. Stay warm this weekend!

Have your favorite sweater ready this weekend: Extremely cold weather is headed to the Badger State late Friday night through Monday morning. Wind Chills will get as low as -35°F at their lowest, and won't be above zero until midday Monday. Minimize your time outside this weekend!

A frigid start to the week continues a cold December. Wintry weather continues this week, with a Winter Storm Watch in effect for much of northern Wisconsin Tuesday into Wednesday. Heavy snow is expected across the Winter Storm Watch area. Wintry mix and rain further south.

Wind during the Fall season for the Contiguous U.S. was the least windy since 1987 and 3rd least windy overall.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in place tonight for southern and southwestern Wisconsin. A general 2-4” of snow is expected, but higher totals are possible over southwestern Wisconsin and near Lake Michigan. This is a quick moving system, so the snow will be done by mid-morning tomorrow.

Light snow is expected across Wisconsin this weekend. Minor accumulations of 1-3 inches are possible over southern Wisconsin (along and south of I-94). A Winter Weather Advisory is in place for Grant County, where 2-4 inches of snow may fall.

Below zero readings made it all the way to the Illinois border this morning, with a -3°F reading at Walworth. Wind chills fell into the -20s in places like Arlington, Kewaskum, Grantsburg, Spooner, Crandon, and Manitowish Waters. This is the coldest weather we've seen since the middle of February.

The leading edge of some really cold air is about midway through the state this afternoon. Overnight, temperatures are forecast to dip below zero for most of the state, with wind chills of -10° to -20°F. Bundle up if you're headed out tonight or early tomorrow morning!

We're headed to Newbold today with the State Climate Office for an extreme weather and climate services roadshow. We'll be introducing the weather and climate services offered by Wisconet and the SCO and learn what else we can be doing to help northern Wisconsin prepare for wild weather.

At 3:20AM today, when the air temperature at the Arlington mesonet station was -8.8 °F, the soil temperature at 2 inches depth (under a lot of snow) was 36.2 °F, and at 40 inches depth was 47 °F. Arlington is not far north of Madison.

With a fresh snow layer, calm wind, and few to thin clouds, temperatures were able to crater. Arlington got down to a teeth-chattering -9 °F early this morning. More cold air is on the way this week, as is the potential for another inch or so of snow this afternoon across far southern Wisconsin.

Here’s the Gridded Snowfall Analysis from the National Operational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center. Most of southern Wisconsin received 6-12” of snow with this storm, making it a very impressive late November event and a great start to the snowfall season.
