How do scientists study what's happening inside a hurricane? One way is by using dropsondes—small tubes filled with instruments that measure temperature, air pressure, humidity, and wind speed!

Grab the hot cocoa! ❄️ Today marks the beginning of meteorological winter, running from December through February. Unlike astronomical seasons determined by the rotation of Earth around the Sun and marked by equinoxes and solstices, meteorological seasons are based on the annual temperature cycle.

Let’s explore the NSF NCAR Timeline! In 1961, NCAR found its forever home in Boulder, CO, on Table Mesa. After a vote by Boulder residents in favor of the site, the land on Table Mesa was donated to the NSF by the State of Colorado. https://www.archives.ucar.edu/exhibits/ncar-timeline

Hurricane Melissa produced the fastest hurricane winds to be recorded by a dropsonde, verified by reviewing data at NSF NCAR! Hurricane Melissa’s 252 mph wind gust surpassed the previous record from Typhoon Megi over the Western Pacific in 2010, where a dropsonde measured wind gusts of 248 mph.
