Both are good — but if the songs were swapped that extra layer of meaning would get lost. One of OFMD’s biggest strengths is finding a needle drop that fits the tone of the scene while also introducing a new idea or emotion (it’s also one of my favorite things to try to do in fic). (3/3)

a thing here is how one of the first things we learned about stede is his dad told him to be ashamed of having things he did not earn. and the first backstory flashback for ed is his mom telling him he would never have anything good that he didn't take with his own hands.

always thinking about stede saying he killed ned low because me & blackbeard are partners, like he thinks they need to trade off doing equal amounts of violence to be an equal partnership, while to ed stede could kill a thousand ned lows and it would never mean as much as the mermaid did

stede is the one with the girly aesthetic but also the one who does the courting and the one who wakes his princess from an enchanted sleep but ed protects stede physically but stede protects ed emotionally but the narrative ends up positioning the emotional protection as what matters most

hard to articulate but for me a key part of the sauce with gentlebeard is that they're doing something really weird in the gender role department but it's not a straight role reversal and it's also not a straight lack of roles either. it's a much more complicated dance than that.
