is bang on about Canada's approach to Trump: "Now, if we speak up, we put our economic security at risk, but if we retreat into silence, we risk losing the very international norms that protect our sovereignty, along with a sense of who we are.”

Bruce Arthur: Donald Trump runs a big red line through Canadian politics
The mercurial American president has divided us into those who see him as the monstrous danger he is and those who don't, Bruce Arthur writes.

i completely agree that this is the key problem with Bluesky discourse right now: The Circumstances are genuinely toxic right now. log off. go scream at an inanimate object. dig a hole. continue digging until you've got a burrow. hide in the burrow. do not bring your phone

This kinda imperial hubris is just fascinating. It's obvs not true (the Taliban are back in power, the communists still run Vietnam, etc) but more than that I find it baffling to want it to be true. The status "citizen of a country that does war crimes with impunity" is imo a bizarre thing to crave.

It is also threatening Denmark's, Colombia's, and Cuba's sovereignty. It has previously threatened Canada's and you can be sure it will do so again. Maduro was an authoritarian unworthy of any sympathy, but the US is embracing lawlessness. Failure to oppose that now only invites further violations.

Canada's response on Venezuela is both right, and wrong. It is right to call for all parties to adhere to international law, but the problem is that the US clearly is violating it. Canada needs to be explicit about this, because the US is not just violating Venezuela's sovereignty.

I have one specific quibble with this article, which I already reposted from Andrew: Instead of arguing that a new oil pipeline is a "national imperative", spinning up new industries in oil-dependent places to reduce our vulnerability should be the imperative. A pipe to a harbour can be blockaded.

If you're a normal person taking bathroom or makeup selfies bc you feel cute, you should just stop. Return to tradition, share it with your friends on group texts. Any public photo is now fuel for the Porn Machine. If your career/hobby involves sharing pics of yourself, it just sucks.

I feel for the people who post their selfies and discover, instantly, weirdos using grok to pornify them. Had a hunch where this was going in 2021 and stopped posting pics of myself/any pics/details about family. But if you're, say, a cosplayer who can benefit from a big audience, you're screwed.
