BOOK #61, 2025 THE SEVENTH VEIL OF SALONE, by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (2024) An unknown Mexican actress is cast as Salome in a big-budget movie, to the consternation of hosts of unlikables. Moreno-Garcia nicely balances multiple characters & storylines, bringing 1950s Hollywood to life. Fantastic.

BOOK #60, 2025 YELLOWFACE, by R.F. Kuang (2023) A white woman publishes a manuscript of her dead Asian friend as her own. There’s much entertainment to be had, but while I’m not one to harp on unlikeable characters, the lack of even one halfway-appealing player becomes wearisome. #booksky 💙📚♥️

BOOK #59, 2025 GHOSTS OF EMPIRE, by George Mann (2017) Gabriel Cross AKA The Ghost (think steampunk BATMAN) becomes embroiled in a conspiracy of supernatural Russian agents & pagan shenanigans. Breathless cliffhanger fun, but little in the way of depth or evolution of character. #booksky ❤️📚

BOOK #44, 2025 INTO THE DROWNING DEEP, Mira Grant (2017) Gruesome b-movie blast. While hardly original (“It’s ALIENS on TITANIC!”), the pacing is quick, the characters strong, the technobabble fun, & the mucous copious. 7) GLORIOUS, dir. Rebekah McKendry (2022) Absolutely bonkers cosmic horror. Imagine yourself trapped in a restroom with the menacing voice of J.D. Simmons crooning evil from the neighbouring stall. That’s the entire set-up, resulting in a claustrophobic nightmare that’s also gory good fun.

4) DOG SOLDIERS, dir. Neal Marshall (2002) Taking an ALIENS-like approach, director/writer Marshall hunts a team of soldiers with a family of werewolves, not skimping on the blood on the way. The best werewolf movie since THE HOWLING, IMO. #filmsky 🎥📽️🎞️

3) CENSOR, dir. Prano Bailey-Bond (2021) Deeply unsettling look at loneliness and psychosis, set during the British “video nasties” panic of the 1980s. A hidden treasure, anchored by a spectacular performance by Niamh Algar. Would make a great double feature with SAINT MAUD. #filmsky 🎥📽️🎞️

2) BLACK SHEEP, dir. Jonathan King (2006) Deeply silly horror comedy about genetically modified sheep on a bloody rampage. A terrific sense of humour and ridiculous gore make this New Zealand gem absolutely worth seeking out,

1) ALLIGATOR, dir. Lewis Teague (1980) A classic, deeply underrated animal attack flick, buoyed by dark humour, a sharp script by John Sayles, a terrific monster, copious blood, and a great performance by the invaluable Robert Forster. The best JAWS ripoff ever made.

6) FROM BEYOND, dir. Stuart Gordon (1986) A goopy, gory, perverse delight. Mad scientists, alternate dimensions, Barbara Crampton, slime, monsters, Jeffrey Combs, slime, body horror, Ken Foree, lovecraftian themes, slime…this one has it all. The late great Stuart Gordon’s best film, IMO. #filmsky🎥📽️🎞️

5) THE EMPTY MAN, dir. David Prior (2020) A spooky mystery that descends into skin-crawling dread. I’m still not sure if I’ve figured out the ending. If you like your films creepy and your endings ambiguous, this is a flick for you. You’ll never toot a half-full beer bottle again. #filmsky🎥📽️🎞️
