When I wrote for Law & Order, we fake-murdered more people on all three shows than were actually murdered in NYC that year. And that was just three shows on one network. Murder mysteries make good stories. But they’re just stories. You’re safer than you think.

The thing is, you can replace “cruel” in this sentence with funny, artistic, thoughtful, thoughtless, compassionate, greedy, kinky, creative, or any of 1000 other adjectives. Why are so many of us only able to see us as exceptional in our faults?

Housing doesn't have to be so expensive. And building denser cities not only makes housing more affordable it also reduces our carbon footprints and makes us less car dependent. It's about as win win as a policy gets.

The way I’d put it is…a not insignificant portion of the internet—and the world, I guess—defines themselves not by the things they do and love, but their opposition to others. When you take that away, they’re bereft of purpose.
