As the analysis starts of the Gorton and Denton result, I wanted to flag some aspects that my experience yesterday suggests are being over or under-played (Caveats - I went to Longsight, Gorton and Denton town centres and spoke to as many people as I could, but it was mostly during the working day)

Summary: The electorate is restless. Labour is rudderless. Greens are hope. Tories are hopeless. And Reform’s silent majority has once again turned out to be a noisy minority.

I think the most interesting thing this by-election highlights in the current political landscape is all the activists switching party complaining of all the dirty tricks their previous party engaged in... ...as if they hadn't been engaged in those same dirty tricks on all the previous occasions!

By-elections are the league cup of politics. Claimed as important by the winners, claimed as not important by those knocked out, a big day out for the finalists, TV and other media just happy to have something extra to cover.

The US system at the moment can be imagined with the executive branch as a toddler on a chainsaw rampage, congressional parents watching the rampage in silent fond approval, and the judiciary reluctantly stepping in once a year to make him stop destroying one specific thing in one very specific way.

Managing expectations- hard to see Andrew M-W getting a custodial sentence for sharing stuff about “investments” in Helmand which came to nothing. It’s very different from Mandelson sharing market-moving stuff about Sterling etc.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social there's a reason why the mealtime listening in my house is the excellent History of England podcast that works its way through our history chronologically. I want my little ones to be aware of all the bits of our history that don't get taught in school.

A step forward, sure, but we should also be aware of the unintended consequences. If there isn't a corresponding duty of candour then info is likely to be suppressed rather than risk prosecution. It also doesn't cover parliamentarians outside of gov't which is a gaping loophole that needs closing.
