Living in Minnesota right now feels like being in the emergency room. Literally everyone is suffering in different ways, even if it's "just" a badly twisted ankle rather than a kidney stone or a full-on heart attack. The staff are working as hard as they can but energy and resources are dwindling.

I should add that in this metaphor, 99% of the helpers/staff aren't paid to do this; it's not their actual job. They just saw the need and ran in to help as much as they could. Meanwhile, the actual professionals who can and SHOULD help in significant ways have run away or are making things worse.

I don’t think we should be using words like “innocent” or “US citizen” or “bystander” or things like that because — what if someone was an undocumented immigrant with a criminal record? Would they deserve this? No one deserves to be executed on the street in cold blood.

Consider: when CBP and ICE agents can shoot and kill and kidnap people with no warrants and no consequences, the lesson sent to anyone who could be profiled as undocumented (basically all racialized people) becomes "if you go to court to defend yourself, you might never see your family again."

I will be honest: we are not talking nearly enough about the downstream effects of these ICE and CBP deployments. For example: landlords and debt collectors file more aggressive collection and eviction suits with dubious (or no) factual bases, knowing that the defendants won't go to the courthouse.

Following this incident I followed up with Mayor Frey to ask for more information about what had happened. His chief of staff confirmed that the Mayor and his administration had a meeting with border czar Tom Homan. I assume the ICE vehicles outside were part of Homan’s convoy.
