We are all dealing with collective trauma from the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. We just weirdly ignore all of the death that happened 5-6 years ago and still occurs. It's still around and we just ignore it and ostracize people who mask because it serves as a reminder that it's still around.

I really like talking and thinking about this stuff. Micro and immunology were my favorite classes during my undergrad and epi classes were my favorite in my MPH program. Humans biggest oops are viruses and they adapt as we do.

Part of the reason COVID is so dangerous is bc it spreads via aerosols and droplets meaning through passive conversation, a sneeze, coughing, can linger in the air after an infected person has left the area. It can also be spread asymptomatically.

But I don't believe hantavirus is the next pandemic agent. People infected get too sick to spread it effectively and the route of transmission is not something that allows for passive spread like COVID or the flu. I know people are going to freak out anyway because it sounds scary.

Like all the recent epidemics and pandemics, the next one will be zoonotic. Zoonotic disease is one of the biggest threats we face and there are measures that we can take to limit the threat that we just aren't doing. Part of my hated of Jair Bolsonaro is him allowing the destruction of the Amazon.
