The apologists and normalizers and equivocators and gladhanders proven themselves incapable of moral leadership. And strident moral leadership, leadership that demands decency *and* accountability, is the only path to any kind of just future.

Our job at that point will be to militantly remember, to refuse moral amnesty, and to reject the re-entry of the indecent into any kind of leadership capacity. Including "thought" leadership, punditry, etc.

The tricky part will be, at that stage we will be urged to equate forgiveness with decency. And because decent people are generally kind, that will be tempting.

What those of us who strive for decency need to hold for ourselves right now is that pro-social norms will almost certainly return at some stage in the not far distant future, simply because societies cannot hold together without them.

Certainly these are times that have been a solvent for pro-social norms. With those norms eroded, people with no intrinsic motivation towards decency are more inclined to engage in hateful and harmful behavior, because that behavior is currently hyper-incentivized, especially in internet media

I don't think these times have been a solvent for decency at all. This has been a precipitation process. It has made decent people coalesce & show themselves. We're also seeing how many people had just been superficially feigning decency, because that used to be a social/professional expectation.

I think it really hinders people's ability to understand art that comes from a different cultural context. Without considering the author, and the author's world, the meaning you can get from the art is robbed of something irreplaceable

"Death of the Author" and the subsequent focus on the relationship between art and the viewer to the exclusion of all other context has made the discussion around media so difficult. It's almost celebrated for a reader not to think about the place the art occupies in society

"Death of the Author" is the art world's version of "the customer is always right. The creatives' opinions don't matter. Ultimately the authority lies with the consumer
