watching the CECOT 60 Minutes segment that CBS suppressed, it’s striking that Weiss specifically called out as unnecessary some of the most rigorous investigative work in the segment, including an explanation of how it was done (by human rights researchers)

"village" mentality is what sustains conservatism. not being able to do anything without the Grandma Gestapo reporting your every move. depending on the easily withdrawn kindness of others instead of impersonal but reliable services. and of course obeying aristocratic landowners

my suggestion is that we continue that struggle in the footsteps of Frederick Douglass and Ulysses Grant and Susan B. Anthony and Harvey Milk, because I believe that project is more likely to succeed than burning everything down in the hope that we can control what is rebuilt from the ashes.

I reject that I’m not a huge rock star, but no amount of wishful thinking will make it true. That’s how our government operates. Voting fascists into control of all branches of government had consequences. Making them behave like normal, compassionate public servants is not easy.

The U.S. is mirroring a pattern that has happened in authoritarian regimes around the world. When a government erects barriers to reproductive care, it doesn’t just cause death and suffering for women and their families. Such policies are often a first step in the gradual decline of democracies.

Birthright citizenship is probably not integral to liberal democracy, but it is integral to *American* liberal democracy. Our vision of what we are as a country, as a nation beyond an ethnicity, requires it.
