I never had a ton of interest in the timeline, personally. When you boil it down it's a pretty archetypal plot each time - the big bad appears and the hero of the bloodline shows up to vanquish him again. Much like Castlevania, you don't need to have played the previous games to get the gist.

Oh and it's a prequel to Link to the Past, so if you're keeping track we have the first game, a sequel, a prequel, a sequel to the prequel, and now a prequel to the prequel. And the next game is a sequel to the prequel of the prequel! And people say Kingdom Hearts has a convoluted timeline!

Suffice to say it was a highly regarded game in its time too, regarded as among the best of its generation. Given that it was pitted against games like Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil 2, Baldur's Gate, Starcraft, Thief: the Dark Project, Tekken 3 and Half-Life, that's definitely no small feat!
