There was not a thing said yesterday that made me want to walk out. But there was also not a thing said that made me think the humanity of what is happening isn’t only thought about for certain people. And it made me sad. While it being quietly expressed that as a Black person I should get it lol.

My engagement with folks around that isn’t always nice. And so I get having this affinity to the place that you feel as though you belong. But the BUT is glaring. Where is your sense of reason in that. How far do I take that anger towards others to protect my neighborhood.

I think about it here. Not even close to the same but walk with me. When I hear people disparage Boston or in particular the part of Boston I’m from. I’m immediately on guard. There’s a tone. A language. Talking pts that folks use that are generally problematic hearsay. Much rooted in WS.

I understand the duality of so many things. I love hearing first hand perspectives regardless of how I personally feel. I can be annoyed frustrated mad or disappointed. But I still take learning from it. So I have really been trying to at a base level wrestle with this blatant storytelling

Because how does one respond to that kind of - what felt like - delusion. And then I was like oh no my presence here was deeply misunderstood lol

I was so surprised by the request I don’t think I even responded 🤣 I just could feel my face in an awkward 🙂🫠

It may have worked on a younger me. I was also invited twice to go to Israel to tour as a non Jew. Not sure how much y’all know about those trips but they have an intent. And people fall into it. And I guess I was slightly taken aback given what is currently happening. No mention of it.

It felt at times like a sales pitch. I tried to confront my biases in this moment. But I couldn’t shake it. It’s hard to shake when you feel like you’re being used for propaganda. And it’s taken me since last night to kind of work through that feeling. Because I know too much.

And I was trying to check my own biases. I think there are some historical reminders absolutely needed from those moments. But it’s not to Black people………

It reminded me why storytelling matters. And it’s not that it was bad. Or wrong for that matter. The stories were the truth for the people presenting it. Absolutely. It just had this icky intentional way of saying hey look at this history. Y’all should be back with us now no matter what…felt off

So I was at temple yesterday for a presentation. I watched a historical doc about the connection between the refugee Jewish community of professors out of Germany (mainly) and HBCUs that were the only ones to hire them. I knew this because I went to one -but the angle of the narrative was so uncomfy

I had the strangest day. My brain is trying to unravel the spaces I end up in sometimes for work. And today was one that had uncomfortable moments. People are so complicated.
