Last night’s Kinoshita: Twenty-Four Eyes (1954). Hideko Takamine is luminous, but what sticks with me is the sense early on of how the girls are at the mercy of so many forces beyond their control.

Part 4 of my 🎶Spring Gloom🎶 series: a too-short film version of a Frank Loesser song. It has been recorded by all the female greats, but usually in a slower & more lugubrious style. (Helen Merrill will break your heart.) Deanna swings it briskly & briefly.

Behind the scenes of Jacques Tati's masterpiece, PLAYTIME - showing next Sun 29th March at 14:45. Released in 1967, this is modernist comedy on a massive scale. Offices, airports, showrooms, all humming with chaos as characters drift and collide. 🎟️:

Last night’s watch: Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just An Accident (2025). Along with The Secret Agent and the Benicio del Toro scenes from One Battle After Another…not since the 1970s have I seen films wield paranoia so well—and try to warn us so effectively.

The only other of Menzel’s works of the Shedd Aquarium I could find; this one from 1933 is so evocative to me of the dimly but invitingly lit windows of an aquarium. Though no animals are depicted, the water feels full of light and movement.

The print was only so-so, but Félix burns up the screen, and the scene where she says goodbye to her lover (in her other role, as a brunette) over the phone is extraordinary.
