While Noonan was away, Old Nash suddenly fell ill & died. She'd requested her body be buried without preparation, but was so beloved by the regiment that not giving her a proper burial was unthinkable. That's when it was discovered that Old Nash had been born with male genitalia.

Luckily for Sgt. Noonan, when Custer & his men were being slaughtered at Little Big Horn, he was with a detachment at the Yellowstone Depot. Noonan & Nash settled into a life of domesticity in Bismarck, Dakota Territory, until Noonan was sent after a group of "hostiles" in 1878...

Nash was briefly married to a clerk named Harry Clifton (attached is a check Custer wrote to Old Nash when she was known as Mrs. Clifton). After he abandoned her, she married Sgt. James Nash, where she got her name. He abandoned her too. Eventually she married Sgt. John Noonan...

Libby Custer wrote of Old Nash: “When she first came to our regiment she was married to a trooper, who, to all appearances, was good to her... She was our laundress, and when she brought the linen home, it was fluted and frilled so daintily that I considered her a treasure..."

Old Nash was celebrated amongst Custer's 7th Cavalry, not only for her skills as a laundress, baker & seamstress, but also as an excellent mid-wife, gently asking new mothers if they were "comph". Burkman wrote that Nash was always "in demand to chase the rabbit when some woman was expectin’ a baby"

Details regarding Old Nash's early life are scant. We don't even know her birth name. She was said to have lost 2 children when she was briefly married in Mexico & later drove an ox team over the Santa Fe trail. In 1866, she became a laundress for the US Army...
