The reviews searched over 12,000 references. They screened 547 full-text papers for inclusion. They included 17. That's a 96.9% exclusion rate at full text. 530 studies were relevant enough to survive initial screening, then rejected by the review criteria. 6/10 reviews found 0 included studies.

And for a long time, you were only allowed to transition if you were attracted to men if you were a trans woman or women if you were a trans man. That was based on homophobia. It was extremely coercive and many trans people had to fake attraction to the opposite gender in order to transition.

What insidious is that the desistance numbers the antis like Ben Appel love to cite is based on the patholigizing of effeminate boys in the 80's by Kenneth Zucker under the DSM-III and DSM-IV. They referred boys playing with dolls to the clinic. The DSM-V helped stop that.

This was done so the medical community would be better able to separate out gender nonconforming youth from trans youth. And all indications are that it worked! Studies have shown that 97.5% of trans youth at clinics have remarkably stable gender identities for at least 5 years.

The medical community had this debate in the 2000's specifically because of the abusive practices of patholigizing effeminate behavior of cis boys. They updated the DSM-V in 2013 specifically to add in a persistent strong desire to be treated as a different gender, not just gender non-conformity.
