Emotional Self-Regulation Biggest challenge of my life I was so bad at it that I started to go into heart failure before the age of 40. I had no idea what it was or that I had the ability to control it? I failed at it. Now, I feel lack of self-regulation everywhere, all the time in avg people!😁

Autistic humans are told to “self-regulate” - as if regulation is a solo project. But regulation is relational. We co-regulate in community, in positive spaces, in predictable rhythms. Stop treating connection as optional. It is survival.

And moreover, if Autism is perceived as preventable and treatable, then the implication is that people with Autism Spectrum Disorder should no longer exist.

Essentially, it Autism is perceived as preventable and treatable, then families (mothers) who fail to take their recommended prevention or treatment steps can be blamed for their kids' Autism and denied social support (eg, healthcare, school-based accommodations, etc.).

Whether they're blaming vaccines and Tylenol, or selling dubious "remedies," what they're really doing is promoting the perception that families (and especially mothers) can prevent and treat Autism. And thus also the perception that people with Autism and their families don't need social support.

I wish people would stop fixating on causes and cures for Autism and neurodiversity more broadly. It's time people listen to us, especially Neurodivergent people of color, women and others who are often excluded. Let actually Autistic and Neurodivergent people take the lead. This shouldn't be hard.
