I think in part the higher education funding crisis and the LLM-teaching crisis actually strike at the same problem, which is that education doesn't work without a broad, society-wide sense that the *actual content* of education - not the credential - is valuable.

I don't see this said enough: the widespread use of generative AI is not only making our jobs as educators harder logistically, but also emotionally. It is genuinely sad to be suspicious of students when you have spent so much time building a pedagogy based on trust and not being a cop. It sucks.

The thing about AI is that I understand there are tasks you would like technology to do for you, makes all the sense in the world, but I have no idea why any of those tasks would be “write a book” or “perform a song” or “act in a movie” or a lot of the rest of this shit

You can’t really learn much if you’re having AI generate your homework, your papers, and everything else you need to complete a class, but for some reason universities keep shoving AI into the learning environment on the assumption that it’s an improvement.

I know that there are a lot of different ways to be in the world, but I actually cannot comprehend how anyone who uses GenAI to do some of their research and/or writing thinks of themselves as a thinker and writer. The thing that makes me a writer is that I do my writing. I also do my prep for it.
