Grading papers and trying desperately to finish rereading this (these things are related), which I read sophomore year. No idea what I was thinking for some of the underlines, but still love coming across things my college-age self thought to note.

Thank you @olgaz.bsky.social for this birthday gift, which I've just finished (and yes, your gift is going to be shamefully late, but you already knew that). The (not so) idyllic pre-revolution days and turbulent post-revolution times of a young woman in Baku. Very recommended.

It's been a long time coming...part two of Andrei Platonov's Chevengur, covering chapters 25-43, is out today! As we finally arrive in the town of Chevengur, nearly 250 pages in, we go from picaresque romp to the dirty work of actually building the Soviet state.

From yesterday: 1) One of my favorite buildings in Santa Monica. 2) Columbia U, where I've neither applied nor worked, sent me a letter, to my parents' address, informing its employees that there had been a data breach. Maybe, again, because someone else has my same first and last name.

I really related to Dana Kanafina's thought experiment, trying to imagine herself in the future, revisiting her home country from the position of acquiring a new identity. It's a game I've been playing my entire life.

"This is what I write about: the way poverty, hopelessness, and unspoken and unprocessed violence corrode a person, and I can’t write about it as it is actively happening to me. This isn’t an untreated, progressing illness; this is my home."
