On this day in 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and killed while standing on a hotel balcony in Memphis. Dr. King was there supporting an economic protest by Black sanitation workers.

A great first week with my class on Black New Orleans. We started off with Indigenous histories of the Lower Mississippi Valley and New Orleans as "Bvlbancha," including maroon histories. It can hardly be overstated how much of our current sociopolitical and legal mess is down to the fact that certain people have been mad at the Fourteenth Amendment (and what it stands for) for 158 years now. That’s it. 🗃️

We visited the National Civil Rights Museum, took a Black Memphis city tour, and celebrated the culture, cuisine, and music at BB King’s Blues Club on Beale Street last night. Yesterday we visited Greenwood, Money, Sumner, Ruleville, and Clarksdale on our Black Freedom Movement tour. Standing at Graball Landing, close to where Emmett Till’s body was recovered, was profoundly moving. And I am always so grateful to visit Ms. Fannie Lou Hamer’s gravesite/memorial. 🗃️ #EduSky

This is all of academia. I know of amazing candidates not hired bc they couldn’t teach the courses the department needed at the time. Yes, hard work puts you in the running but you have to apply at the right place right time. There are so many things that you can’t impact- luck is huge.

Yesterday we went to Jackson, Mississippi, to visit the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument. It is always a profoundly humbling experience. (And, in terms of a little emotional relief, the front lawn resident cat kindly responded to my “pspsps” and came over for some pets.) 🗃️ #EduSky

Today we visited Laura Plantation, a Creole heritage site outside of New Orleans (in Vacherie, LA) that tells the of stories of both free and enslaved Creoles (of Color) and Louisiana’s histories of racialization, enslavement, and freedom. Joseph, our tour guide, was amazing. 🗃️ #EduSky

Please excuse me, our Black Freedom history travel group is in New Orleans, and I’ve just heard a guest say that a beignet is like a glazed donut, and I need to intervene immediately.
