A brief intro as there's a steady flow of new folks. I've been a publishing freelancer for about 20 years. Educational publishing is my home base but I try to expand beyond it, especially since the world of textbooks is ... all the things it is right now.

Your Democratic City/County office should be a place you know you can always go for some emergency formula, a sanitation kit, to get a ride to the food bank, to get resume help or something notarized. And most of these would cost relatively little to offer.

If you begin Star Trek: Voyager episode Spirit Folk at exactly 11:49:35 on New Year's Eve, Ensign Harry Kim will kiss a cow as the clock strikes midnight. Join in a very dumb annual tradition and start 2026 off on the right hoof.

I was going to post Elisabeth Moss talking about how “Fred Armisen’s greatest impression is that of a normal person” but when I looked it up to get the wording right I learned AI has somehow turned it from being a scathing post divorce condemnation to being a really nice complement

As
@riversidebryan.bsky.social
somehow guessed, the gentleman with this wild hair/atrocious wig was…Mickey Rooney, Jr. He was a guest on GERALDO in 1990. And even in 1990, that hair was…no bueno. He passed in 2022.

I want to watch someone run over these guys. Real slow. ICE is a cauldron of psychopaths, hopped up on white nationalism, and the entire agency has to cut off like a diseased limb. There is no reforming this shit. Merry Christmas.

Some amazing YouTuber has put together 45 minutes of promos for a slew of 70s and 80s holiday shows—and then included links to many of them in the description section, so you can actually watch what’s seen in the promos. Have yourself a merry Gen X Christmas now:

This Yglesias piece in the NYT is horrifically bad. Almost every "fact" it cites is provably false. At best it is cocktail party banter from a pundit who knows nothing of energy. At worst, it was cut/paste from oil industry talking points. So, a rebuttal:

Remember how I said I have it written into my foreign-language contracts that my work has to be translated by an actual human? This shit is why. Those book translations are gonna suck. They'll save money putting out books that are going to be painful to read. That's not a great long-term strategy.

6 years ago, a federal ban on gender-affirming care for young people was absent from the national Dem agenda, seemed unlikely to almost everyone who isn’t trans. 6 years ago, Marjorie Taylor Greene was a QAnon crank with a crossfit gym. Yesterday her ban passed out of the House with three Dem votes.

This is the correct interpretation on David Zaslav. Saying he's bad at his job is comical. He just isn't good at his job in a way that anybody with a soul (artistic or otherwise) would recognize, nor is he charismatically evil. He's making himself and people like himself rich.

I have had several projects in a row in which I have been explicitly asked not to note certain kinds of errors because "the copy is really clean," and there are always a number of such errors, and even though in theory it means less work to ignore things, it chips away at me.

I don't think my mother ever used dial up internet, because she didn't get internet at home until she retired. (I suspect none of my relatives her age ever had dial up, come to think of it.) I didn't have an AOL address, because I already had an email address.
