After all the "I don't read anything but dialogue," "adjectives are a scam," "prologues aren't part of the book" takes, it's refreshing once in a while to see some completely vanilla take like "this fantasy character's name is too modern for me."

My mother always talks about how when I was adopted, my foster parents wrapped me in multiple layers despite it being "an incredibly hot day." I was miserable and I'm sure they wondered what they'd signed up for. Turns out it was the hottest day in New England history.

None. A good translator will find a local equivalent (and have done in the past). A good translation is NOT transcription. It gets the vibe right. Which is why I insist a human translates my novels, not "AI."

I'm not saying it's *true*, but I am saying that "the president thinks the rest of the world is a game of The Sims and he's just fucking around" accounts for more of the last couple years than any other theory.

The people who love to tell us they're not watching the Super Bowl or the Oscars and they don't know who Harry Potter is or whatever ... let's just take a moment and acknowledge their loss, because they would've LOVED not celebrating the 250th, but it's no fun when no one else is celebrating either.

The monthly ritual of bumping to the top of the Criterion Channel queue the movies leaving at the end of the month. Do I have The Apartment on DVD? I do. Did I watch it at New Year's? Sure did. Will I watch it this month just because it's leaving the Channel? Obviously.

One thing that I’ve learned in my study of backlash politics from Reconstruction through the Civil Rights Movement is that backlashers are a persistent bunch. The undoing of Reconstruction took several decades, and post-WWII backlashers looked back on that patient counterrevolution as a model.

People, for the love of God, please stop treating birthright as some kind of sweeping victory. It was 5-4 on the constitutional issue. The dissent laid out a fucking ROADMAP for what Trump should do next. The court always gives Trump multiple bites at the apple WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU HAPPY ABOUT?

As the mom of two girls who play sports let me just say: I could give a fuck about the sex at birth of any child they play with or against. Condoning the policing of youth sports in this manner is bigoted.

Court can't go on like this. The Constitution as plainly as possible says people who were born here have an unequivocal right to citizenship. Four people whose ONLY job is to read the Constitution for the rest of their lives just tried to overturn it because they're tired of brown people. Pack it.

, the very best thing you can do is to acknowledge & apologize for the harm your comments had caused and THEN talk about why your views have evolved. Pretending you did not make these comments is insulting to your constituents, especially those in the LGBTQIA+ community.

With this ruling, the birthright issue is not going away. The right hasn't really begun *organizing* around getting rid of the citizenship clause. Like Roe, this will be their fight for a generation. And if the Democrats just say "we won" and ignore it, like Roe, the Republicans will eventually win.

It is hard to overstate just how much everyone was Bicentennial crazy in 1976. The 200th birthday party was, coast to coast, a big fucking deal. And that was in a very contentious election year. This entire 250th has been a dud, and for good reason. Who feels good about flag-waving right now?
