And I wish I could say it was just stories written about us by cis people. But forgiveness as an imperative has been cooked into western society for generations, specifically because it lets abusers and oppressors off the hook. Sadly, we're not immune to that conditioning.

Once you notice how often "you need to forgive your abusers/give them grace/realize it was all a misunderstanding" trope comes up specifically in stories about trans characters, you can't unsee it.
