I did my whole long post thread to honor Sam Kieth, and then a friend posted this panel, and it says it all really. RIP, Sam.

It cannot be overstated how weird & groundbreaking THE MAXX was upon release. It was this crazy culture grenade, bridging the Venn diagram between mainstream comics & Alt (not indie) comics. In an era of anti-heroes, The Maxx satirized that, redefining what mainstream comics could be. RIP Sam Kieth.

For some kids coming up in the 90s (like me and @ludopolitics.bsky.social), Sam Kieth was one of our first hints that comics could be truly weird. He recognizably emerged from the action-superhero lineage but then he fuckin’ SWERVED, and his style was so compelling that he brought us along with him

Sam Kieth did not bend for comics. Comics bent to him. I won't call his manner of drawing merely a style because that implies some level of artifice. Maybe not since Kirby had mainstream comics seen an artist with less filter between his imagination and the printed page.

Since I have lot more followers on here now, let me repost this and stir up some more trouble again.

My other bit of comic book industry wisdom (without naming names) is that, in the long run, its always better to work with great people on a failed venture than with horrible people on a successful one.
