It takes more time, but for me it's always important to keep the lettering off the artwork as much as possible. In this example, rather than stick the balloon over the character's head, I've masked it behind his hair. I always enjoy the challenge of keeping the art clean & clear. #comics #lettering

Too many letterers these days ignore the Line of Sight rule, whereby balloons should not block the line of sight between two speaking characters. In this example, I show how a little bit of thought on my part keeps the eye contact open between the two characters who have dialogue. #comics #lettering

The modern method of having letterers letter a book and editorial treating it as a first draft is criminal. It’s one thing if it’s a balloon of two per issue where a writer misjudged how much space a balloon might take but I see writers completely rewriting books after they’ve been lettered.

Okay, this sucks, award-winning letterer @simonbowland.bsky.social, one of the best in the business and the first name I suggest when editors ask, is dry of work at the moment. Simon is EXCELLENT, always tasteful with great impact. If you need a letterer, this is one of the best. Recommended!

Simon was our letterer for BE NOT AFRAID, and he's a major reason why the project turned out as well as it did -- Mr. Phim's angelic script, over and against the shaky regular script of the mortals, builds the mood beautifully without ever being too heavy of an effect.
