Watched FIVE EASY PIECES for 1st time in 30 years. This was seminal for me. We were all young, artsy and frustrated. I had family problems. Not rich talented family problems, but none the less, Nicholson’s frustrated “rebel without a cause” character felt real. I love everything about this movie.

I’d never heard of CUTTER’S WAY. It’s a slice of life film double timing as a thriller. That the ending doesn’t quite land is the only thing keeping it out of upper tier character films like Five Easy Pieces, Last Detail, Friends of Eddie Coyle. Lisa Eichhorn should have won an Oscar.

Watched this film MICKEY 17. I really, really, really, really wanted to like this film. It was not a good film. And it wasn’t fun enough to be a Buckaroo Banzai type of bad fun. It was just bad. And full of great actors overacting their heads off. And ultimately boring.

Saddened to hear of the passing of Sam Kieth, a brilliant artist, writer, and all around human being. One of the earliest artists to jump aboard Image in its infancy. Sam used Mako and Savage Dragon in the Maxx and I used the Maxx in Savage Dragon. We only collaborated once and Sam bailed on that.

One Battle and Sinners are the only 2 I’ve seen. That said, I liked both. Neither was transcendent overall. Sinners, though, had transcendent moments. Higher highs and lower lows. I do have a soft spot for that Pynchon-type satire, though. Neither had a great film ending.

I’ve seen only two of these films (Obe Battle and Sinners) I liked Benicio Del Toro better than Sean Penn. Delroy Lindo was better than both. I also find it hard to believe that Stellan Skarsgård wasn’t also deserving as he’s always great (though I didn’t see that movie).

Today was the last day for my HBO Max subscription (for a few months), so I watched the last 5 ep. of Tokyo Vice. I really enjoyed the show. Glad it came to an ending and didn’t leave it hanging. I hate discovering new shows only to find they were abruptly canceled. Have to read the memoir now.

This is one of my favorite old commissions I drew. I usually don’t do this kinds of noodle inking but was really inspired by ol’ Swampy. Everything clicked with the brush on this one.

TIL: Chester, Illinois has a "Popeye Trail" of 19 statues (28 characters) situated throughout the city in honor of hometown hero Elzie Segar. Beyond the main cast they have Castor/The Whiffle Hen, The Sea Hag/Bernard, Alice the Goon & Child, King Blozo, Toar & more. I have a nerdly urge to visit.
