Non-Black people that aren’t (outright) Negrophobic and try to engage Black folks in major European cities will at first deploy AAVE or name particular things that are centric to Black American lore (Fresh Prince of Bel-Air). If they recognize that you aren’t BA however, the negrophobia jumps out.

And as someone who didn’t grow up in the United States, I can tell you that AAVE is everywhere and used (often wrongly) by everyone. This only heightens the antiBlack fetishization Black Americans experience and stabilizes their dehumanization when traveling to places within Europe, for instance.

Anywho, lemme share a resource if folks wanna read theory that helps them understand this better. I always recommend reading The Black Body as Fetish Object by Anthony Paul Farley, it’s a great article that touches upon how the Black body is used to construct and sustain whiteness as an identity.
