Good morning. The government is shut down because Trump wants to act like a king and steal from you. Democrats have no obligation to support a budget that funds the destruction of our democracy - and DOUBLES health premiums to fund a tax cut for billionaires.

Most of the power authoritarians have is freely given. We should not comply with them in advance. Trump is far weaker than he looks. So is the GOP. We should draw them out, drain them at every opportunity, and fight for people’s wellbeing at every turn. We have been sent here to fight for people.

The government is officially shut down. Make no mistake: Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House. This is THEIR shutdown. They had every tool to govern and chose chaos instead. The American people are the ones paying the price.

Small point about the coverage of Hegseth’s stupid convening: Trump has not “renamed” the Department of Defense something else. He *calls* it that. If I started calling the president “Adolf,” one would not say that I had “renamed him Adolf.” He has no more authority to rename DOD than I do him.

It's been "clear" for a while now. The Trump White House views government shutdowns as triggering an free-for-all of Article II "inherent powers." SCOTUS clearing the way for "pocket rescissions" didn't help. But he likely thinks he can spend as well as block spending. Even on the mandatory side.
