As a science fiction writer I really fucking resent tech bros for ruining the phrase "artificial intelligence." 80 years of it being all about cool androids and interesting computers destroyed by five years of "Spicy autocorrect making everything shittier for money." NEVER FORGIVE.

Saw it in an art show called "Counterhistories", in show on "Art & Democracy", and in show on the 250th Anniversary of U.S. more recently. Kent State (1970) is not completely forgotten like some U.S. atrocities like the Orangeburg Massacre that killed students in 1968, but important to talk about.

As a former StoryCorps facilitator, this is fucking disgusting. End the project already, Dave. You created a good model: you encouraged people to sit and do oral history for 20 yrs. Turning StoryCorps into a surveillance capitalism nightmare is not worth the money to keep the project going.

Reposting this because, hilariously, someone running an AI news aggregator just plagiarized the hell out of it and got shared 3x as much as the original post. So you know, here's the actual piece. Where I talk about LLMs making copies of copies of copies of copies and how that drives disinformation.

Even in the depths of colonialism, genocide, enslavement, ethnic cleansing & holocaust, there have been white folks all over who have refused and resisted white supremacy. We get to choose which ancestors we honor. One of my ancestors was an enslaver who sold my foremother. *I don't claim his ass.*

Oh, one more thing: if you're reading this, and you have archives and family records dating from enslavement that you know Black Americans (and/or Black America as a whole) would benefit from having, you have a moral and ethical obligation to share them... and deep down, you know it.

As I always do with boycotts, I urge: be tough with corporations, gentle with individual buyers. For some people, Black Friday sales are the way they get their kids jackets that fit, shoes that hold up to the weather. Yelling at them doesn’t help the cause.
