Box pews were fashionable in colonial churches in the 18th century. People who worshiped at Old North had to buy their seating, so box pews were considered property. Owning a box pew was very expensive. Some cost the equivalent of a day laborer’s annual salary!

On this day in 1940, Boston’s Paul Revere statue was unveiled! Around 8,000 people gathered to watch the big reveal, including the statue’s sculptor, 79-year-old Cyrus Dallin. He had waited 55 years since a committee had first selected his design to see the statue displayed.

Today, on the 85th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, Old North's Congregation helped honour the 10 Americans who fought in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) forces during this battle, the first military campaign fought entirely in the air.

On this day in 1757, an Englishman named John Childs flew from the steeple of Old North Church – sort of. A traveling entertainer, Childs built a makeshift zipline for his stunt. He tied a rope from the steeple to a tree about 700 feet away.

We remember those killed in the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Our Memorial Garden honors American lives lost in the war on terror. We recognize the courage shown by Americans in service of one another.

What is the purpose of the six-sided dome above Old North’s pulpit? This structure is known as a sounding board. It’s hollow inside and helps to amplify sound, which was a huge help before the advent of the microphone!

On this day in 1630, the city of Boston received its name! Previously, the Puritans had called the settlement “Trimountain” after a large hill with three summits. On September 7, the settlement was renamed “Boston” after the port town in Lincolnshire, where several prominent colonists were from.

One of the responsibilities of the church Wardens was to maintain order during the service. The long rods at the end of the Wardens' pew were used to "adjust" the attitude of a churchgoer. A prod from the stick could quiet a disruptive congregant or awaken a sleeping one!

Historians say that from 1630 until the 1830s, the North End intermittently housed the largest number of Black residents in Boston. To dive into this history, community activists have developed a new North End Black History Trail!

On this day in 1954, Hurricane Carol ripped off the steeple of the Old North Church! Believe it or not, this was the second time our steeple had been toppled. The original was lost during “The Great Gale of Boston” in 1804. Miraculously, our original weathervane survived both storms.

This is the energy we're bringing to the long weekend!

Old North Church is home to the oldest set of change ringing bells in the U.S. They were cast in Gloucester, England, and installed in our steeple in 1744. Change ringing is the traditional English style of bell ringing in which intricate patterns, rather than songs, are played.

While Anglicans interred the deceased in sacred spaces (such as Old North's crypt), New England Puritans chose to bury their dead in unconsecrated, civil burying grounds owned and operated by town governments. Copp’s Hill, located steps from Old North, is one such burying ground.

Built in 1723, Old North Church is the oldest still-standing church in Boston. Old North was the second Anglican congregation in the city, with King’s Chapel being the first. The original King’s Chapel was built in 1688, but the building was demolished and replaced in 1754.

Have you seen the new statue of Prince on our campus? Prince was a beloved black cat who used to wander around Old North Church. He would greet guests, walk along the church's box pews, and occasionally startle visitors to the crypt by popping out of the open tomb!

Today is Samuel Prescott’s birthday! Prescott was the only rider to reach Concord on the night of Paul Revere’s ride. This photo shows where Prescott, Revere, and Dawes were intercepted by British troops. Revere was captured and Dawes fell from his horse, but Prescott escaped.

Last night, we hosted a special gathering to celebrate the release of the new Old North Church postage stamps! 💌 The beautiful stamps are available in post offices around the country and on the USPS website.

On this day in 1740, coppersmith Shem Drowne was paid for his work constructing Old North Church’s weathervane. Drowne is America’s first documented weathervane maker! Here is a rare close-up photo of the weathervane when it was being reinstalled after maintenance work on the steeple.

New Old North Church stamps were released today by the Postal Service! USPS has introduced two Forever Stamps that highlight the special role of Boston in the American Revolution: one of the Old North Church and one of a "midnight rider" on horseback. We can't wait to mail them!

Did you know that from 1745 until 1810, the Old North Church was the tallest building in Boston? We replaced the Old State House and were replaced by Park Street Church!

Built by Thomas Johnston in 1759, our pipe organ was the first organ made from parts totally sourced within the colonies! The casing that Johnston created for the organ is still in use today, while the organ’s inner workings (pipes, pedals, bellows, etc.) were replaced in 1992.

Do you see the outline of a window on this brick wall? According to legend, Old North’s sexton, Robert Newman, escaped British patrols through this window after displaying the signal lanterns in the steeple on the night of Paul Revere’s ride.

A few years ago, our team started digitizing old photos from our archives. We are particularly fond of this photo. This picture is likely from a naturalization ceremony held at Old North Church. We suspect it may be from a ceremony circa 1980, led by Senator Ted Kennedy.

Back in the 1700s, Old North Church's box pews were lavishly decorated, reflecting the wealth, and perhaps personality, of those who purchased them. While today's pews are unadorned, the "Bay Pew" is still decorated in the 18th-century style with cushions, wall coverings, and replica furniture.

Paul Revere did not worship at Old North Church…but one of his sons did! Joseph Warren Revere attended Old North in the early 19th century, sitting in Pew #54 with his family.
