The clock hanging under Old North's organ has been keeping time for 300 years! Truly amazing considering that this is the only clock that church members Richard Avery and Thomas Bennett ever made.

Today is the birth anniversary of the North End’s most infamous con man: Charles Ponzi. His signature Ponzi scheme made him millions, allowing him to take over the Hanover Trust Bank on Hanover St. The scheme eventually collapsed, and the bank went under.

On this day in 1935, Porky Pig made his theatrical debut in the cartoon “I Haven’t Got a Hat.” In his very first appearance, Porky attempts to recite the poem “Paul Revere’s Ride”!

Today is the death anniversary of William Dawes. On April 18, 1775, both Paul Revere and Dawes made midnight rides to Lexington. While Revere’s ride became famous, Dawes has remained relatively anonymous. In 1896, Helen F. Moore published a parody of Longfellow's poem:

Did you know that Old North's original donation box is still in use? If you look closely, you can see the initials "CC" for Christ Church and the year 1724 carved into the lid. This box has seen over 300 years of coins and bills!

In 1784, Black abolitionist Primus Trask Hall married Phebe Robson at Old North Church. He is believed to have been the son of Prince Hall, the founder of Black Freemasonry, and Delilah, an enslaved woman.(1/2)

Back in the 1700s, Old North's box pews were lavishly decorated, reflecting the wealth, and perhaps personality, of those who purchased them. While today's box pews are mostly unadorned, the "Bay Pew" is still decorated in the 18th-century style with cushions, wall coverings, and replica furniture.

Happy Presidents’ Day! Six presidents have made documented visits to the Old North Church over the years. We host hundreds of thousands of annual visitors, so it's quite possible that a future president has already passed through our doors!

It's snowing today in Boston, which is appropriate because February 7 is the anniversary of the Blizzard of '78. Ferocious winds created snow drifts as high as 15 feet tall. Over 3,500 vehicles were immobilized along an 8-mile stretch of Route 128.

On this day in 1788, Massachusetts became the sixth state to join the United States of America. After nearly a month of contentious debate, the Massachusetts convention ratified the U.S. Constitution by a narrow vote of 187 to 168.

Did you know that Old North Church contains roughly 500,000 bricks? The bricks were made in nearby Medford, MA. Ebenezer Clough, who lived behind Old North on Unity Street, was the master brick mason responsible for the church's construction.

This drawing of St. Botolph's Church in Boston, Lincolnshire hangs in Old North's parish house as a nod to the English town that Boston, MA takes its name from. The name “Boston” is said to be a contraction of "St. Botolph's town," as the church is the area’s largest landmark.

This back pew is where the church Wardens sat. One of their jobs was to maintain order during the service. The long rods at the end of the pew were used to "adjust" the attitude of a churchgoer. A prod from the stick could quiet a disruptive congregant or awaken a sleeping one!

Today is the death anniversary of King George III. This British monarch famously lost the American colonies in the War of Independence. In subsequent years, George suffered from a severe mental illness. The king’s eldest son ruled as Prince Regent starting in 1810.

Today is Benjamin Franklin's birthday! Did you know that he once lived in Boston’s North End? As a boy, Franklin resided at the corner of Union and Hanover Streets.

Born in 1746, William Billings was America's first noteworthy composer. A self-taught musician and leather tanner, Billings was a colorful and important figure in Revolutionary Boston.

Today is the anniversary of the Great Molasses Flood of 1919. When a tank filled with 2.3 million gallons of molasses collapsed on Boston’s waterfront, a 15-foot-high wave of molasses rushed through the streets of the North End at 35 mph, laying waste to anything in its path.

On this day in 1784, the Continental Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris, ending the Revolutionary War and establishing the United States as a free and independent nation. This unfinished painting by Benjamin West depicts the signing of the treaty.

The young actors portraying the Von Trapp children in the national touring company of The Sound of Music visited Old North Church today! It was a treat to hear them perform the titular song in our sanctuary. 🎶

Carved in the 1620s in what is now Belgium, these beautiful angel statues were originally headed to a Catholic church in Quebec in 1746. However, the French ship was raided by British privateer Captain Thomas Gruchy, and the angels were donated to his home church of Old North.

On this day 302 years ago, the Old North Church celebrated its first worship service. Remarkably, construction of the church had begun only nine months earlier in April. In his inaugural sermon, Rev. Dr. Timothy Cutler preached that Old North “shall be called a house of prayer for all people.”
