The furnace decided to start smoking all of a sudden. Every smoke detector in our house started blaring at the same time. I'm guessing something sparked because I don't see how dust could've built up when it's been running just fine for a week.

I have been thinking this same thing. If you drive the speed limit, or a little below the speed limit, if you slow down for stale greens just in case they're about to turn yellow, if you're extra patient with bikers and pedestrians, you're actually following the law AND slowing down ICE.
