By the last stretch of Until the End of the World (1991), the characters basically only live to sleep and then stare at a device that shows their own dreams back to them. The way some people interact with social media already made that movie feel prescient. ChatGPT is making it feel even more so.

Those selling this stuff have said for years "We don't know how it does what it does!1!" as a way of suggesting they've passed some threshold into the miraculous. Of course they know exactly how it does what it does — but the press, which does not, breathlessly reports their claims verbatim, again.

There’s no business or residence on the corner across the avenue from us, so nobody had cleared a path, so I borrowed tools from my building and did it. My therapist is out of town, so I just redirected that hour to shoveling for my neighbors, and honestly it probably helped me more.
