Those old aircraft reflex sights work by shining a reticle image up through a magnifying lens, then bouncing it off of a beam splitter at a 90 degree angle. If we were to add a second beam splitter, then make the first one a full mirror, we'd have my HUD design!

Much like how WWII aircraft gunsights use a collimating lens and beam splitter to project an illuminated reticle at infinity, this design enables an integrated reflex heads-up display inside the unit for high quality visual feedback -- all without compromising the parallel holographic projection.
