I loved this observation/conversation between the Davids on this week’s @the-downballot.com podcast. Whereas so many elite institutions have caved to Trump in the face of his threats this year, it is the PEOPLE who have consistently stood up to him, whether as voters, protesters, or even jurors.

Earlier this year I suspected that the Senate could be in play in 2026. After last night I am now convinced that the Senate WILL be in play in 2026. A Democratic-controlled House *and* Senate is on the table next year. We have one year to make it happen.

Oh wow. This is a shock. Golden represented the most Trump district held by a Democrat, and would likely have won reelection next year. Former GOP Gov. Paul LePage is running to flip #ME02 and we can’t let that happen.

And this extends beyond just the VA House seats. As ALL of the major races were called last night and the photos of the victors appeared, the diversity of the winning Democrats became impossible to ignore at a time when such diversity is actively being vilified by Republicans.

These were the two Washington State Senate elections I highlighted last week as toss-ups, and Democrats held on to both.

History doesn't repeat itself...but it sure can rhyme. And right now 2025 is sounding A LOT like 2017. Our next goal: Build on that progress and make 2026 sound exactly like 2018.

This is gonna be a runoff election to watch closely...
