People in general believe that the economy is good if business people are in charge with less regulation. This is basically why GOP always is thought of as the party that knows economics. It’s also a recipe for an economy to crash hard

It’s probably the easiest way to describe a GOP voters mindset: “if someone else gets help it’s an undeserved handout but when I get it it’s ok because im a hard working American”

Insofar as you can draw a line from the start of the GOP until now, it’s that they really don’t like government helping people. It would be advisable given they rely on working class voters to win elections. Thought a lot of working class voters are also anti government helping people in theory

Blaming Biden for the economy a year into your presidency only works on the folks who are already on your side no matter what. The average mid term voter is already Dem leaning and very skeptical of the Trump admin. Maybe it changes the narrative a bit but overall you won’t be winning that way

The fundamental mistake of the Trump admin was running on promises he had no intention to keep. Especially lowering prices. That was his and the GOPs excuse for all the bad they would do. “You may not like the chaos but the prices will be cheap.” Was the take away for a majority of voters

Trump and the GOP made three specific promises that any idiot could understand which was: 1. Deport criminal illegal aliens 2. Revenge against trumps enemies 3. Lower the prices Trump has only really kept his promise on point 2

That said the economy had stabilized and was fine by 2023. It’s actually worse now by all available metrics in comparison to when Biden was president. Part of it is tariffs part of it is slowing wage growth. Also lay offs have been happing at a higher tick.

Like I hate to be against the grain but the economy was never bad in comparison to real economic downturns. GOP along with the MSM hyped up a bad economy to help them win in 2024

The fact that Trump really went hard on economic messaging in 2024 then forgot about it as soon as he won really showed how his campaign was “do and say whatever it takes” The American electorate is dumb for falling for it but the press also refused to point out that they had no plan.

For example if Dems had kept attacking on stocks falling then stocking going up would be a giant victory for him. Instead they said “if prices keep rising he’s a failure” And prices kept rising. The press especially caught onto this and inadvertently made it the metric of success for him

The Dems did a good job in the early days of the Trump admin pointing out price increases and spikes. Some people thought this was dumb but I think it really set the bar of what success would be for Trump.

Trumps big economic bill the BBB was not passed until the summer. Thats too long. By April/May voters realized Trump wasn’t going to do anything meaningful. If he had done BBB asap he probably could have gotten the MSM to pretend he was some genius

Trump and republicans are way better at running as opposition. They know how to get the MSM on their side to help throw bombs at society. But as soon as they get power the nose dive. Don’t even try to govern or do anything.

Trump spent a lot of time in 2024 (along with the msm and leftists) saying the economy is bad and he could return it to its former glory. They spent so much time convincing people life was terrible that it never bounced back

For Trump and the GOP to win back gains with Latinos they would need to scale back on ICE raids and really change the strategy to targeted raids (which is what Dems do) But then he will start slipping with the whites who are all in on deportations.

Trumps coalition is WWC people who want less immigration and mass deportations, minority groups who wanted lower prices, and billionaires. Trump has gone in on the first and last group leaving the minority groups to the wind. The coalition has fallen apart and with it the GOP’s chances in 2026

A lot of journalist adjacent people make strongly make this argument but it comes off more as they want to stay in the good graces of the political media vs authentically believing it.
