In the case of ME/CFS, and later Long Covid though, the people taking that off-ramp *were* trained in data analysis, medicine and medical research. They excluded the evidence - of patients themselves - because their theory fitted too well and simply to let the evidence shake it.

More than 20 years ago a friend of ours who suffered from ME took her own life in large part because her suffering was continually dismissed as a weakness, a character flaw...

Thanks for this. As a doctor, it is incredibly easy to say to people with ME/CFS “I believe you”, and apologise for the way doctors act towards them (often disgraceful, IMO). Goes a long way but doesn’t replace the deficit in research into the condition😔

Funny thing is, blood letting might actually be more helpful, as ridiculous as that sounds.

Every year I do a lecture on long covid to our clinical exercise physiology Master’s course. It’s eye-opening for a group told that “exercise is medicine”. It often is, but for chronic fatigue syndromes it’s about as useful as blood letting.

One more thing. The majority of ME/CFS sufferers are women. Inevitably, this means: a. the illness receives less attention b. sufferers are likely to be dismissed or ignored c. doctors are more inclined to believe the causes are psychological. Misogyny still runs deep in medicine.

Starting in the late 1970s, they pioneered what later became the Tory culture wars. The human cost was immense - and continues to this day. But I see them as an anti-empathy cult. So they can hardly be expected to care.

They seemed to apply a highly effective formula: use Trotskyist entryist tactics to promote an extreme rightwing agenda. The UK Establishment (and the Hungarian government) turned out to be highly receptive to it. They got grand positions, honours and a massive media platform.
