Nobody expected this to last SEVENTEEN YEARS so fair enough, really. Although part of me did imagine that it might still be around in the far distant future, the subject of myths and speculation as to who or what was being commemorated here. This IS a place of honour, after all.

Yesterday afternoon I went to Park Guell, a scenic spot filled with squiggly buildings and walkways by our old friend Big Toni Gaudi. It’s also home to hordes of noisy parakeets (not pictured): they’re monk parakeets that build huge communal nests in the trees, hence the constant squeaky squabbling.

Yesterday I visited the Recinta Modernista de Sant Pau. Built 1903-13 by Lluis Domenech i Montaner (he of the Palace of Music, seen earlier), it was designed as a hospital and operated as one till the early 2000s. Some of the buildings still still house healthcare offices; others are being restored.

Today in Barcelona I saw a cat so beautiful that he elicited gasps of awe and amazement from every tourist who saw him (including, but not limited to, me). Then when I examined the photo more closely later, I realized that it not only includes a second cat, but also makes a potentially great meme.

While the news of a #Ghosts movie is great, I’m only a teensy bit disappointed they’re not going with my pitch for it, illustrated here. Apparently they’re claiming flimsy excuses like “enormous expense” and “major copyright infringement”?

Today I visited the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, for a big art fix. Nice building, too. Here’s a thread of some of my highlights!

Today, I visited the biggest building site in Barcelona: the Sagrada Familia, masterwork of Antoni Gaudi. A work in progress for 143 years, it’s due to be finished this June (well, sort of – some bits are still ongoing). Btw, it’s a basilica, not a cathedral (Barcelona already has one of those).

Hear me out, but Ghosts Do Traitors! Starts with Claudia visiting Button House, getting a bonk on the head and becoming able to see them all, then the gang INSIST on playing the game. Alison and Mike join in, the latter somehow making it to the finale even though he hasn’t a scooby what’s happening.

I’ve discovered the breakfast equivalent of going to mainland Europe and finding they’ve still got C&A.

Another lovely building I visited today was the Palau de la Musica Catalana (Palace of Catalan Music, built between 1905 and 1908 by Lluis Domenech i Montaner. Yes, something that wasn’t built by Big Toni G (Lluis DM was Gaudi’s teacher, though).

Today I visited the Casa Batlló, one of Gaudi’s greatest and most squiggly buildings. Everything from the window frames to the chimneys on the roof is curvy, organic and often clad in colourful ceramic tiles.

Watching the Spanish version of Countdown, which is somehow a primetime show with a 200,000 euros top prize every episode, and bears only the ghost of a resemblance to the mid-afternoon puzzles-and-whimsy fest in which you might win a novelty teapot.

Top tip for cheap Barcelona thrills: go to the top floor food court in El Corte Ingles department store in the Plaça de Catalunya. The views of the city are amazing and free and the booze is surprisingly cheap. I mean, sangria for 3 euros? It’d be rude not to…

I’m in Barcelona this week, so expect a LOT of photos of twiddly architecture, since Barcelona does it so well. To start, here’s Gaudi’s Casa Mila (1906–10), better known as La Pedrera (The Quarry) because of its undulating rock face vibe. (Am pacing myself with all things Gaudi, so didn’t go in.)
