I take lithium. I spent a year struggling with many meds that didn't help me. Stopping lithium cold turkey is bad for my brain (ask me how I know). And lithium has a short half life. Many antidepressants need a much larger taper, to be safe. My meds are between me and my doctor (who is the best.)

After two decades, my depression is reasonable well managed. I still get depressed, but it isn't as deep or as dark as it once was. My Cymbalta plays double duty with my nerve pain, which is also pretty well managed right now. I used to be in excruciating pain 24/7. Not to mention withdrawal!

There is something so insidious about the "only take them as long as you need them" language that they always frame as a very compassionate moderate position. My brain has quirky chemistry. When I go off my meds, it gets bleak. Just like when I take off my glasses, I can't see as well.
