One thing Trump/Miller/Vance don't grasp is that their concept of "real Americans" (i.e., white conservative reactionary bigots) isn't 50% of the country, it's maybe 15%, with another 20% who are fellow travelers until something affects them. a whole bunch of terrible people support ICE's murder of Renee Good, and the vast majority of them are Republicans. But by a 2-1 margin, they are outnumbered by people who disapprove of the murder, and portraying this as Americans being split along party lines overstates support for the murder.

"Hew closely to party lines" badly understates disapproval of the shooting. 1) ~2x as many people say "not justified" (54-28) 2) Independents say "not justified" by ~3-1 margin (61-21) 3) Only Republicans support the shooting, and they do so by much smaller margin (52 pts) than D's disapprove (90).

"We now don’t have to speculate as to what American fascism looks like. It’s right outside the door" isn't an ambiguous phrasing coming from a resident of a city that is currently under attack, block by block, house by house.

First, the percentage of Americans who thought ten years ago that things could get this bad is small. Really small. Not "nobody," but small. And second, as a matter of political rhetoric, "this is not who we are" is more effective, I think, than "this was always coming."
