From day 1, bands (& their managers) have been trying "psyops" like this, since before payola. At best a band gets airplay & some sales, but you can't trick people into liking music they don't like. That 's the bedrock of poptimism: popular things are actually popular, there's no cheat code.

I mean, look at the Monkees, the all-time artificial band, & sneering at them used to be bien pensant. Now everyone recognizes that combining great songwriters with good, charismatic singers and the best session players alive creates, you know, good music. No original sin of marketing changes that.
