Watching a classic film I've not seen every day in 2026. 59. Ghost (Jerry Zucker 1990) Unusual mash up of supernatural romance, yuppie nightmare, comedy & neo-noir. Whoopi Goldberg is on genius form, FX are superb and the ending completes a morally satisfying structure. 8.5/10

Watching a classic film I've not seen every day in 2026. 54. Black Narcissus (Powell & Pressburger 1947) A largely boring story, stiff acting, 2 brownface actors, patronising colonialist tosh. It's beautifully shot but mostly fails as a tense psychological drama. 5/10

Watching a classic film I've not seen every day in 2026. 52. Secret Agent (Alfred Hitchcock 1936) WW1 spy shenanigans with unconvincing plot, a wooden Gielgud, a shockingly hammy Lorre, Madeleine Carroll doing her best with an idiotic character. Style without substance. 4/10

Watching a classic film I've not seen every day in 2026. 51. Sherlock Jr. (Buster Keaton 1924) I couldn't believe some of the stunts and edits. They seem literally like miracles, defying physics, baffling the human eye. The film within a film is surrealistic genius. 10/10

Watching a classic film I've not seen every day in 2026. 49. The 39 Steps (Alfred Hitchcock 1935) Script loosely based on the novel, mostly delivering early versions of familiar Hitchcockisms. Highlight is Hannay's escape on the Forth Bridge. Solid, not a masterpiece. 7.5/10

Watching a classic film I've not seen every day in 2026. 48. Letter to Brezhnev (Chris Bernard 1985) Scouse girls Elaine & Theresa cop off with two Soviet sailors in a love letter to Liverpool. Sex, romance, escape, Cold War politics, Thatcherism, great dialogue. Sound. 10/10

Watching a classic film I've not seen every day in 2026. 44. The Hunger Games (Gary Ross 2012) Efficient rehash of tropes from Rollerball, Death Race 2000, Logan's Run, The Running Man etc. Mid CGI. Won't bother with the sequels. I'd rather watch Battle Royale any day. 7/10
