Fred and I wait outside the shop. I say it’s nice to see it getting lighter and he mishears and agrees that it’s breezy. He tells me he saw my sister in law walking past his house yesterday. The shopkeeper arrives and we carry the papers in.

Early stroll. The availability of birdsong. One day I’ll sit and count all those fallen leaves. Morning is opening across the sky. Curtained light from a bedroom window. A green watering can, almost invisible in a garden.

Late stroll. The spotlight moon is gently washed by lapping strips of fluffy cloud, their pastel greys on fading blue; then blanketcloud envelopes sky, & moon peers where it can, illuminates thick strands of fog above, a saddened patch of eye, which blinks, and then is gone.

Mild. Mist encroaching. The miniature golden galaxy of a budding gorse. An orange truck carrying boulders uphill. Revving chainsaws. Felled pines. Piled logs. A cyclist with a Dali-esque moustache. The smell of fried bread...

The sun rises over Durham Cathedral. A man shouts, ‘Money for nothing!’ Two teenage boys eat steaming hot pasties. A little girl looks at me and shrugs. I walk past the old cinema and remember a film I watched there.

Early stroll. The horizon’s pale forehead. A sleeping taxi dreams of long distances, empty roads. That daffodil’s piece for solo yellow trumpet. A cat runs towards Tesco. A bike light on the hill teaches me about distance and perspective.

Late stroll. A metal fence is a row of retrained giant paperclips. The sign light flickers and the word ‘bridge’ comes and goes, making metaphors swirl. Two sofas on a drive cling as they solemnly await their fate. An audience of hydrant signs watches on impassively.
