This piece really spoke to me. To juxtapose something so universal as preparations for a prom against the deadly reality of a modern war makes the whole story seem quite unbelievable. Sadly it's all too real.

Morning all. Of all the many, many photographs Iβve seen this remains one of my all time favourites, like a Caravaggio painting. What a frame. Photograph by Chris Steele Perkins, Blackpool 1972.

If you didnβt know that I live in the same part of Bury where Victoria Wood grew up, you could guess it from a sentence issued by a woman Iβve just been chatting to down the park. βI once saw down here, and Iβll never forget it because it was the day my friend had both thumbs off, two kingfishers.β

Early stroll. A fly tries to fly into my eye. The sky wears a tattered shirt of cloud. Captain America guards a windowsill. Ghosts of a lolly-stick alphabet. The bloke who always crosses the road in the same place crosses the road.

Early stroll. Time has signed the skyβs portrait. Full skip as local history book. The man on the Public Footpath sign, endlessly walking nowhere. A parked car painted and decorated with bird poo. A double deckerβs shadow moves across a bungalow.

One of the most frightening lines in this piece is "The sweltering night-time temperatures currently harming peopleβs sleep are about 100 times more likely today than in 2003." The speed at which the world is warming up is incredible. I've no time for climate-change denialists. Read the science!!
