BREAKING: A federal judge in Massachusetts (the Reagan-appointed William Young) has declared the Trump administration's cuts to NIH grants — ostensibly over Trump's EOs on gender ideology and DEI — are "illegal" and "void." He's ordering many grants restored.

After ruling, with anger in his voice, Judge Young: "This represents racial discrimination. And discrimination against America's LGBTQ community. That's what this is. I would be blind not to call it out. My duty is to call it out. And I do so."

It's 2p here in Boston, and we're back on the record in the NIH grant terminations case. It's possible Judge Young could issue some sort of ruling here in the next few minutes, or he could provide more context for case management going forward. Stay tuned.

A victory for the federal scientific workforce! We could not stand by while this irreparable harm continues at NSF, NOAA and all our scientific agencies. TODAY the judge granted our request to temporarily HALT the mass firings at federal agencies under Trump’s Executive Order.

Dorks, it’s time to throw sand in the gears. They want us to stop teaching, we will teach in the streets. They want us to stop our research, we will use archival data. They want to send us back to the dark ages, we will be a light. We will not lay down and take this.

With rumors of more NSF grant terminations today, contact your university research offices about top admins checking email. Termination letters come from a random NSF email that could go to junk folders & are not directed to core staff that handle proposal/award submissions or communications daily.

US based scientists are not ok.

I believe with all of me that this is illegal, this is our lives, our dreams, these grants & resulting innovations help communities, transform possibilities, make science/the world a better & more just place. I'm heartbroken and so, so angry to say that my NSF grant that asks how we can make conferences better serve people doing environmental science in different sectors was terminated of Friday. Keep different back for science and let's hope for injunctions against these illegal actions.

so far I'm seeing a lot of universities respond to grant terminations with "oh I guess now we don't have that grant anymore" instead of "your assertion of a grant termination is executive overreach, see you in court" So, universities: respectfully, what the fuck?
