I’m giving a free/public talk this Tues in Seattle about how US government investment in science laid the foundations for the field of human-computer interaction and how that field (and investment) connects to so many of the innovations that we take for granted, as well as the future of AI.

Universities. Rural hospitals. Tech companies. Several sectors are going to be profoundly hurt by this. Not to mention the chaos of the moment as current H1-B owners scramble to get back to the U.S., cancel travel, etc. due to the uncertainty. An absolute mess. As intended.

The H1-B visa thing is, like everything else in the Trump administration, set up to carve up exceptions for friends and punish enemies. It’s the authoritarian thru-line that stitches everything together.

Here's why that matters. Calling the authoritarian moves of this administration and his party "unprecedented" means people have no idea how to respond. It's paralyzing. It also gives cover to those in power who fail to hold Trump accountable. If it's so new, there's no playbook for accountability.

This coverage also finally moves past claims of “unprecedented” — NONE of this is unprecedented. The only way to see it as such is to ignore the rest of the world, much less history.

I remember in 2022, while I was on the academic job market, asking how institutions plan to protect their faculty that study race. It’s an important question because everyone loves the public facing scholar until they say something that pisses off white supremacists.

When we say the NIH is becoming politicized, this is a great example. NIH staff are not allowed to attend a scientific meeting (where they engage w/ scientists in their grant portfolios) because a deeply politicized DOJ is trying to use its power to squash even the remote appearance of dissent.
