So I have been exploring copilot generative AI to better familiarize myself with its output to recognize it more easily when I see it in the wild. This tool falsifies results sections of papers in a way that is NOT easy to detect. wtf are we going to do in science, peer review can't catch this.

ChatGPT just wasted 5 of my hours by making up info and insisting it wasn’t lying. I was trying to see if it could actually help me find publicly available datasets with questions about politics in people’s ego networks and was thrilled when it output a long list, but things went quickly downhill…

I'm genuinely not sure what this is supposed to mean but now worried. The National Archives in College Park houses the public records of DOJ, the military, etc. & is used daily by scholars, students, genealogists, etc. Having govt records accessible to the public is part of what makes the govt ours.

After the brutal reality of dealing with student papers in the ChatGPT era finally hit me, here are a few tactics that I've found at least somewhat effective in getting students to do their own writing: 🧵

This! I ranted this semester and some students said it was helpful. Many students I caught using AI said they didn’t think anyone cared.

If you're a grad student or an undergrad interested in research I need to you listen to me very carefully. You cannot learn to write good research papers if you do not read good research papers. Stop asking LLMs to summarize papers for you.

One thing I’ve often found interesting in research on perceptions of health disparities is the frequency with which the perspectives of the communities that bear the brunt of those disparities are omitted. In our latest @commhsp.bsky.social paper, we highlight what gets lost when that happens.

Next up from the lab is Emily Antognoli presenting work at #MPA2025 examining students’ tornado intentions. Threat perception was more predictive of tornado response for women vs. men. Whereas concerns with social disapproval was more predictive of quickly moving to a safer room for men vs women.

And finally Rebecca Sutton who’s poster won an #MPA2025 Psi Chi research award shows that anti-immigrant attitudes are linked to status threat which correlates with increased gun interest, negative behaviors toward international students and professors, and decreased civic engagement interest.

My lab is sharing our work at #MPA2025 First up is Tessa Hammond with her work on student commuters. Mediation analyses show that commuters felt more lonely on campus and this relationship was mediated by feelings of belongingness. Neither gender nor campus involvement buffered this relationship.

Most people in the US have no idea about the attacks on federally funded science or our government institutions. Many (or most!) of your family, coworkers, neighbors, and friends have no idea. My own MAGA dad thinks DOGE is just identifying waste, and that nothing has been cut. We have to tell them.

Some people’s research will be flagged and then will move on with clarification. Other people’s research will be flagged and… it’s done. The differences in who those people are will not be random.

I think we’re back in the place where you have to say the obvious things out loud so people don’t forget them: diversity makes emergency management better. It quite literally ~saves lives~. We have research on this from around the world. Different people have different needs related to disasters.
