OK so after some digging, I think the actual closest 3-way by-election split is the 1921 Penistone by-election, where the 3 candidates were separated by only 6.1% / 1437 votes. The next closest and most recent post-war is Eastleigh 2013, with 6.7% / 2783 votes between 1st and 3rd.
