The Israeli internal crisis isn't about restoring democracy, nor is it a pendulum movement. It's a hollowing out of democratic institutions, opposition, and all means of oversight and accountability. It is, as Navot and Goldshmidt show, an elite-driven project to dismantle Israel's flawed democracy.

Yael Shomer, @etzelgov.bsky.social‬, and I have a new editorial in Frontiers. We review the multiple crises in Israeli politics since 2019 and summarize 6 articles published in a “Research Topic” related to these crises. We also review the scale of democratic backsliding before and during the war.

As @roizur.bsky.social and others have shown, Likud and ideologically aligned parties like Sa'ar's (a former Likud Member who sold out and joined the govt because he had little odds of returning to the Knesset on his own) are much more in line with the radical right than with center-right parties.

We sometime give too much credit to leaders of center-right parties. We often believe that the shift of mainstream parties to the far-right is a vote-seeking strategic reaction, but we need to recognize that sometimes these are far-right leaders who happen to be in CR parties acting sincerely.

I agree with all of these and add two more: 1. Cap compensation for administrative positions (at least at unstable institutions). 2. Buy off-campus accomodations that are not in full capacity (feel free to transform these to council housing) and force universities to pay back their loans.
